A city in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1986. It is an agricultural area occupying a plateau northeast of Ushiku Lake, and Ushiku, in the center, was a post station on the Rikuzenhama Kaido (National Route 6). In 1903, Japan's first brick winery was built here, and it is home to Chateau Kamiya, a winery owned by Godo Shusei (formerly Kamiya Shuzo), and a large vineyard. It borders southeast of Tsukuba and north of Ryugasaki, and is within the Tokyo commuter range of the Joban Line. Housing development is progressing and industrial parks are also being developed. 茨城県南部の市。1986年市制。牛久沼北東の台地を占める農業地で,中心の牛久は陸前浜街道(国道6号線)の宿駅であった。1903年日本で最初に煉瓦造のワイン醸造所が建てられた地で,合同酒精(旧神谷酒造)のシャトーカミヤと広いブドウ園がある。つくば市の南東,龍ヶ崎市の北に接し,常磐線が通じて東京通勤圏となり,宅地化が進みまた工業団地の造成も進んでいる。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。58.92km2。8万1684人(2010)。
