Inoue Theater Dojo

Japanese: 井上演劇道場 - いのうええんげきどうじょう

Inoue Masao, who had been the most progressive Shinpa actor since the end of the Meiji era, founded this theater company in April 1936 with Murayama Tomoyoshi as a collaborator. Aiming to create artistic popular theater, the company was described as a "middle-ground theater" between Shinpa and Shingeki. With Yamaguchi Toshio, Okada Yoshiko, Yamamura Satoshi and others as members, the company performed socially conscious and sharp human drama such as Hisaita Eijiro's "Fault Line," Miyoshi Juro's "Hikoroku Laughs Greatly," Yagi Ryuichiro's "The Bear's Song," and Hojo Hideji's "Gorgeous Night View," which were well received. The company was shaken by the Sakhalin border crossing incident of Okada Yoshiko and Sugimoto Ryokichi in January 1938, and the departure of Yamamura Satoshi, Sasaki Takashi, Suzuki Mitsue and others in February 1942, but was encouraged by Yamamoto Yuzo's writing of "One Hundred Bales of Rice."

明治末期以来，新派俳優中で最も進歩的行動をとってきた井上正夫が，1936年4月，村山知義を協力者として創設した劇団。芸術的な大衆演劇の創造を目標にしたのを，新派と新劇のあいだを行く〈中間演劇〉と評された。山口俊雄，岡田嘉子，山村聡らを座員として久板栄二郎《断層》，三好十郎《彦六大いに笑う》，八木隆一郎《熊の唄》，北条秀司《華やかな夜景》など社会性をもった鋭い人間劇を上演して好評を得た。38年1月，岡田嘉子と杉本良吉の樺太越境事件，42年2月の山村聡，佐佐木隆，鈴木光枝らの脱退事件で動揺したが，山本有三が《米百俵》を書き下ろしたのに力づけられた。
