Japanese: 巴人 - はじん

1677-1742 (Enpo 5-Kanpo 2)
A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Hayano and given name was Jinsuke. His other pen names were Soa and Yahantei. He was from Karasuyama, Shimotsuke. He went to Edo to study under Kikaku and Ransetsu, and became acquainted with Hyakuri and Giku. In 1727 (Kyoho 12), he moved to Kyoto and guided Soya and others, and ten years later he returned to Edo, formed Yahantei, and nurtured Buson, Ganto and others. He maintained a pure and elegant style in the vulgarizing haiku world, and his personality and insight greatly influenced Buson. His haiku are calm and elegant. 江戸中期の俳人。姓は早野，名は甚助。別号は宋阿，夜半亭。下野烏山の人。江戸に出て其角，嵐雪に学び，百里，祇空らと交わる。1727年(享保12)京に移住して宋屋らを導き，10年後江戸に帰って夜半亭を結び，蕪村，雁宕らを育てた。俗化する俳壇にあって清高の気品を保ち，その人格と識見は蕪村を大いに感化した。句は平静淡雅である。〈小夜時雨船え鼠のわたる音〉(《夜半亭発句帖》)。【田中道雄】
