1677-1742 (Enpo 5-Kanpo 2) A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Hayano and given name was Jinsuke. His other pen names were Soa and Yahantei. He was from Karasuyama, Shimotsuke. He went to Edo to study under Kikaku and Ransetsu, and became acquainted with Hyakuri and Giku. In 1727 (Kyoho 12), he moved to Kyoto and guided Soya and others, and ten years later he returned to Edo, formed Yahantei, and nurtured Buson, Ganto and others. He maintained a pure and elegant style in the vulgarizing haiku world, and his personality and insight greatly influenced Buson. His haiku are calm and elegant.
