Born: 1579/1580, London [Died] December 11, 1643. Fulham, commander of the trading fleet of the British East India Company. As an employee of the East India Company, he participated in the second Oriental voyage in 1604, and served as chief commercial officer of the Bantam trading post in Java until 1610, when he returned to Japan. In April 1611, on the eighth voyage, he commanded three ships, the Clove, the Hector, and the Thomas, and set out from Downs for India, but he gave up on his original destination of Surat, and arrived at Hirado via Bantam with only the Clove. In June 1613 (May 1613), he had an audience with Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sunpu and Tokugawa Hidetada in Edo, accompanied by William Adams. He presented a letter and a gift from King James I, obtained a red seal of trade permission, established a British factory in Hirado, and appointed Richard Cox as its chief. He returned to Plymouth Port via Bantam in September 1614. His book "A Voyage to Japan" is included in the "Shin Ikoku Sōsho" (New Foreign Books).
