A bond that does not have an coupon on the face of the bond, is issued at a price that subtracts the interest from the face value (discount issue), and the principal is repaid at face value at redemption is called a discount bond, while a bond that has an coupon on the face of the bond is called an interest-bearing bond. Representative discount bonds include discount financial bonds (see the section on financial bonds) and discount government bonds (with a maturity of 5 years). Most bonds are interest-bearing bonds, and not only interest-bearing financial bonds (see the section on financial bonds), but also corporate bonds, local government bonds, medium-term interest-bearing government bonds (with a maturity of 2 to 4 years), and long-term interest-bearing government bonds (with a maturity of 10 years), etc.

券面に利札(りさつ)がなく,額面から利息分を差し引いた値段で発行され(割引発行),償還時に額面価額で元本が返済される債券を割引債といい,これに対し,券面に利札の付いている債券を利付債という。割引債の代表としては,割引金融債(〈金融債〉の項参照)のほか,割引国債(期限5年)などがある。また利付債は,大半の債券類がそうであり,利付金融債(〈金融債〉の項参照)はいうに及ばず,社債,地方債,中期利付国債(期限2~4年),長期利付国債(同10年)など,みな利付債である。
