Virgin Islands - Virgin
A group of islands in the eastern West Indies, east of Puerto Rico. It consists of 40 islands (348 km2 , 106,405 inhabitants, 2010) that are US territories, such as St. Thomas in the west, and 60 islands (151 km2 , 28,054 inhabitants, 2010) that are British territories, such as Tortola and Virgin Gorda in the east. Columbus arrived in 1493, but no Europeans settled there until the 17th century. The US islands were purchased from Denmark in 1917. The main economic activity is tourism, but the US territories are more developed, with manufacturing industries such as watches and textiles.
