An island belonging to Kami Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called Senzoku Zōzōjima or Senzoku Zōzōjima. It is a low mountainous island made of Cretaceous rocks. Its area is 6.40 square kilometers, and its highest point is 167 meters. It was part of the former Iwa Village, but in 1954 it became part of Oyano Town, and in 2004 it merged to become Kami Amakusa City. With the construction of the East and West Oyano Bridges (1976), it is connected to Oyano Island via Yagyu Island. There are a series of shrimp farms on the west coast of the island, and about 30% of the catch is shipped to the Tokyo market. In addition, the east coast of the island is home to Zōzō Beach, and nearby Mt. Taikan, which offers a great view. Population 1,790 (2005).
