Iwajima

An island belonging to Kami Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called Senzoku Zōzōjima or Senzoku Zōzōjima. It is a low mountainous island made of Cretaceous rocks. Its area is 6.40 square kilometers, and its highest point is 167 meters. It was part of the former Iwa Village, but in 1954 it became part of Oyano Town, and in 2004 it merged to become Kami Amakusa City. In addition, the east coast of the island is home to Zōzō Beach, and nearby Mt. Taikan, which offers a great view. Population 1,790 (2005).
