The capital of Huancavelica Department in south-central Peru. It is located about 250 km east-southeast of the capital Lima, in the Andes at an altitude of about 3,800 m, overlooking the Huancavelica River, a tributary of the Mantaro River, a part of the Amazon River system. It was built in the late 16th century as a mining center following the development of nearby mercury mines, and prospered as a mining town throughout the Spanish colonial period. Mercury production declined in the 19th century, but after a railway link was established with Lima via Huancayo to the north in 1926, mining became active again, and it is now a mining and refining center for silver, lead, mercury, etc. Population: 27,400 (1990 estimate).
