Borel set

Let I be a half-open interval of the form [a, b) on a line, or [a ₁ , b ₁ ) × [a ₂ , b ₂ ] on a plane. The set of sets obtained by constructing the complement I ^c of I from such half-open intervals, and the union ∪ In from countable numbers of In, is called the Borel set family, and a set belonging to it is called a Borel set.

Clearly, a half-open interval can have its length or area determined, and thus, if we consider the fully additive measures that can be generated from it, then the Borel set becomes measurable and the measure is defined.

Since an open set can be expressed as the union of a countable number of half-open intervals, the Borel set can also be defined as a completely additive family of sets generated from open sets.

The above definitions can be directly extended to n-dimensional spaces.

直線上の［a,b）の形の半開区間、また平面上の［a₁,b₁）×［a₂,b₂］の形の半開区間をIとする。このような半開区間からIの補集合I^c、および可算個のInから和集合∪Inをつくることにより得られる集合の全体をボレル集合族といい、それに属する集合をボレル集合という。

　明らかに半開区間には、その長さまたは面積が決定できる。よって、それから生成される完全加法的な測度を考えると、ボレル集合は可測になり、測度が定義される。

　なお開集合は半開区間の可算個の和集合として表されるから、ボレル集合は開集合から生成される完全加法的な集合族と定義してもよい。

　以上の定義はn次元空間にもそのまま拡張される。
