This clay mineral was named by Yoshinaga Naganori and Aomine Shigenori (1962) after it was isolated and confirmed from a glassy volcanic ash soil called "imogo" in Kyushu. Chemically, it is a hydrate (SiO 2 ·Al 2 O 3 ·2.5H 2 O) in which silica and alumina are bonded in a fixed ratio of 1. The mineral unit has a hollow tubular structure with an outer diameter of about 20 Å and an inner diameter of about 10 Å, and appears fibrous under an electron microscope. To the naked eye, it is observed as a translucent gel-like film in the weathered pumice layer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
