An evergreen tall tree of the Myristicae family native to the Maluku Islands (illustration). The seeds without the arils are called nutmeg, and are usually made into a product by peeling the seeds, soaking them in lime solution, and drying them. The thick, mesh-like, red-colored arils that surround the seeds are called mace, and both have long been prized as spices and medicines. The trees grow to heights of 10 to 20 meters, and most are dioecious. The leaves are leathery, oval with pointed tips, 6 to 13 cm long. The flowers are small, yellowish-white, urn-shaped, fragrant, and petalless. Male plants produce several male flowers, while female plants usually produce one to three female flowers in a drooping inflorescence. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
