...As a playwright, Bababhuti (8th century), author of Mālatīmādhava and two other plays, is considered to be on a par with Kālidāsa. Many other playwrights followed, including Viśākhadatta (9th century, some say he was a contemporary of Kālidāsa), author of the political play Mudrārākṣasa, Bhaṭṭanārāyaṇa (7th-8th century), author of the six-act Veṇīsaṃhāra based on the great epic Mahabharata, and Rājasekhara (10th century). However, after the 10th century, Sanskrit literature declined along with other forms of literature.
