Gentlemen's directory, list of notables. The first publication to bear this name was launched in 1849 by A. & C. Black in England, and usually lists the names, addresses, careers, occupations, hobbies, family relationships, etc. of people of high social standing. In Japan, the oldest is the first edition of the Nihon Shinshiroku (Japanese Gentlemen's Directory) (Kojunsha) published in 1889 (Meiji 22), followed by the Jinji Koshinroku (Jinji Koshinsho) published in 1903. Gentlemen's directories specific to specific industries and fields have also been published, and most are generally annual.
