Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome : A disease caused by infection with the AIDS virus (HIV). It destroys white blood cell T cells, causing a severe decline in immune function, leading to death from difficult-to-treat opportunistic infections such as fungal infections and pneumocystis pneumonia, Kaposi's sarcoma, and tuberculosis. The main routes of infection are semen and blood. It was reported in the United States and other countries around 1981. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
