Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome : A disease caused by infection with the AIDS virus (HIV). It destroys white blood cell T cells, causing a severe decline in immune function, leading to death from difficult-to-treat opportunistic infections such as fungal infections and pneumocystis pneumonia, Kaposi's sarcoma, and tuberculosis. The main routes of infection are semen and blood. It was reported in the United States and other countries around 1981. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. 《acquired immunodeficiency syndrome》エイズウイルス（HIV）が感染して起こる疾患。白血球のT細胞を破壊するため免疫機能が極度に低下、真菌症・ニューモシスチス肺炎など治療困難な日和見感染やカポジー肉腫、結核を併発して死亡する。主に精液・血液が感染経路となる。1981年ごろに米国などで報告された。後天性免疫不全症候群。
