Noda soy sauce dispute

Japanese: 野田醬油争議 - のだしょうゆそうぎ
Noda soy sauce dispute
The longest labor dispute in prewar Japan, which took place in 1927-28. The Japanese General Confederation of Labor (Sōdōmei) was established in 1921 at Noda Soy Sauce Co., Ltd. (now Kikkoman) in Noda, Chiba Prefecture (with approximately 2,000 employees), and in 1923 and 1925, it submitted demands to the company and had them realized. In April 1952, when the workers demanded a wage increase, the company attempted to destroy the union, using organized crime groups and local organizations to suppress the workers, and fired 1,047 workers who had been on strike since September at the end of the year. The workers continued to strike, but the Kyoyōkai stepped in to mediate, and a settlement was reached in April 1953 with the reemployment of 300 workers and the payment of various allowances, bringing the 216-day strike to an end, and destroying the Noda branch of the Sōdōmei Kanto Labor Domei Association Brewery Workers' Union.
