Many textile products, such as threads, cloth, and knitwear, intended for clothing are not left plain, but are given color, patterns, and designs using dyes, pigments, and other coloring agents. The dyeing industry refers to the industrial production of such work. Looking at the scale of the dyeing industry, in 1995 the total value of manufactured goods shipped was 1,152.4 billion yen, there were approximately 6,500 establishments, and the number of employees was approximately 84,000. Furthermore, establishments with 100 or more employees accounted for approximately 2%, with the overwhelming majority being small and medium-sized enterprises.
