A representative sculptor of the early Italian Renaissance. His real name was Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi. He was mainly active in his native Florence, except for a short stay in Padua. He first studied under Ghiberti and worked on marble sculptures, but around 1420 he moved to bronze and established his own style. One of his representative works, David (c. 1434, Bargello Museum, Florence), is important as a realistic nude statue that had been lost since ancient times. The Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata (1447-1453) in Piazza il Santo in Padua shows a beautiful fusion of realism as a portrait sculpture and idealism as a monumental statue. Other works include Zuccon (Habakkuk) (1427-1435, Florence Cathedral Museum) and Mary Magdalene (late 1450s, same museum).
