An alga of the family Zygophyceae in the order Zygophytales of the Chlorophyta Zygophyceae. It grows in relatively clean water such as standing water in marshes and lakes. The algae are single-celled and angular with sharp ends, resembling a crescent moon. The cells are 100-800 μm long, have a central nucleus, and are symmetrical from top to bottom, but have no central constriction.
