...His lecture The Story of a Novel, published the following year, is moving in its candid confession of the secrets of his creative process. His posthumous works The Fabric and the Rocks (1939) and The Homeland of No Return (1940) feature George Weber as the protagonist, and the latter in particular shows a marked shift from his previous egocentric tendencies to a way of thinking that tries to relativize the self as a member of society, but this was not fully developed when the author died young from a relapse of tuberculosis during a lecture tour. His other works include the collections From Death to Morning (1935) and The Distant Mountains (1941), as well as the lecture Writing and Living (1964). ...
