The first translation of a Western internal medicine book published in Japan. Genzui Udagawa (Kaien), a doctor of the Tsuyama domain stationed in Edo, translated the internal medicine book by the Dutchman J. de Gorter (1744) and began publishing it in Edo in 1793 (Kansei 5). After Genzui's death, the publisher moved to Osaka and underwent several changes, and the entire 18-volume series was completed in 1810 (Bunka 7), more than a dozen years later. This book prompted Western medicine in Japan, which had previously been oriented toward surgery, to develop by adding internal medicine, and some people began to call themselves Western internists.
