A registration number given to crop varieties developed at research institutes affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries or at nationally designated test sites scattered throughout each prefecture. In 1925, a nationwide organization began testing new varieties using cross breeding methods for wheat, and the following year for rice. The new varieties developed through this program were called by their Norin numbers, and the same method was gradually applied to other crops. They were named after the respective crops, such as "Rice Norin No. 1" or "Wheat Norin No. 1," and these varieties are still called by these numbers today.
