Condé Family - Condé (English spelling)

Condé Family - Condé (English spelling)
A noble French family that began with Charles de Bourbon's son, Prince Louis I of Condé (1530-69). For generations, the head of the family was called Prince Condé, and was considered the first of the royal bloodlines. Louis I was a leader of the Huguenots, but was assassinated for participating in the Amboise Conspiracy. The second king, Henry I (52-88), was forced to convert to Catholicism during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (72), but fled to Alsace. His grandson and son of the third king, Henry II (88-1646), became the fourth king, Louis II, known as "The Great Condé" and a key figure in the "Fronde of the Nobles." His sister, Anne Geneviève, Duchess of Longueville, was famous as a heroine of the Fronde, on a par with Madame de Montpencher. The 8th generation, Louis Joseph de Bourbon (1736-1818), fled the French Revolution and organized the Condé Army (counter-revolutionary army) to fight against the revolutionary army and then against Napoleon's army. The 9th generation, Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon (1756-1830), is known as the Duke of Bourbon, but he died mysteriously and his son also died young, so the Condé family was inherited by another family.
