A seaweed belonging to the brown algae family Laminariales. The algae consist of a well-developed stalk and a leaf attached to the top. The stalk is perennial, hard, cylindrical, and significantly branches at the bottom to form a rhizoid that attaches to the bedrock. The leaf branches bifurcates and then pinnates to form numerous leaflets. Those that grow at depth can reach a total length of 1.5m. It is widely distributed throughout Honshu, and can form large colonies from the lower intertidal zone to the low tide line. In some areas, it is edible. It is also a source of alginic acid. 褐藻類コンブ目コンブ科に属する海藻。藻体はよく発達した茎状部とその上端につく葉状部から成る。茎状部は多年生で固く,円柱形で下端が著しく分岐して仮根となり,岩盤に固着する。葉状部は二叉状に分岐し,さらに羽状に分れて多数の葉状片となる。深いところに生育するものは全長 1.5mに及ぶ。分布は広く本州全土に及び,潮間帯下部から低潮線にかけて,大群落をつくることがある。地方によって食用とする。また,アルギン酸の原料となる。
