Popayan (English spelling)

Japanese: ポパヤン(英語表記)Popayán
Popayan (English spelling)
The capital of Cauca State in southwestern Colombia. It is located about 370 km southwest of the capital Bogota, at an altitude of about 1,760 m, on the western foot of the Prasé Volcano (4,756 m) in the southern part of the central mountain range of the Andes, and is close to the source of the Cauca River. It was built in 1536. During the Spanish colonial period, farmers and mine owners from the surrounding area gathered in this area, blessed with a pleasant climate, and built a beautiful Spanish-style town. It became the cultural and religious center of the region early on, and even today the city has many educational institutions, including the University of Cauca (1827), museums, churches, and monasteries. After Colombia's independence, the city did not develop economically as much as the cities in the Cauca Valley to the north, but there are currently industries such as food processing, sewing, and construction materials. It is a key transportation hub, the terminus of the railway line heading south from Cali, the junction of the Pan-American Highway leading to Ecuador, and the road that crosses the Central Mountains to the east. Population: 147,138 (1985).
