Noema is a term used in E. Husserl's phenomenology, along with noema, and the two are in a correlative relationship as the catalyst for consciousness. It comes from the Greek nous and noein. According to Husserl, consciousness is always consciousness about something, and therefore consciousness has an active and an objective aspect, the former called noesis and the latter noema. Noesis is not simply an intentional action, but also an action that gives meaning. And noema corresponds to this action and is constituted by it. Whereas noesis is reell (real), noema is ideell (ideological). In Japan, it has been incorporated into Kitaro Nishida's idea of absolute nothingness.
