Shodanren (English: National Liaison Committee of Consumers' Organization)

Japanese: 消団連 - しょうだんれん（英語表記）National Liaison Committee of Consumers' Organization

It was formed based on a resolution at the National Consumers' Conference held in 1956, mainly by the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union and other organizations. As of August 2006, 44 consumer groups, mainly the Housewives Association, are members of the organization. Initially, the main theme of the organization's activities was price issues, such as opposition to increases in utility fees and the return of profits from the strong yen, but in recent years the scope of its activities has expanded to include food safety and the elimination of fraudulent business practices.
