French soldier and civil engineer. A former engineer, he achieved great success in research into ballistics and gunnery, and in 1758 he became director of the Paris Arsenal and Inspector General of Engineers. He was skilled in theory and practice, and made great contributions not only to military science but also to civil engineering and construction engineering. His work, "Science of the Engineer," was a handbook for construction engineers and was reprinted several times over the course of nearly a century, from 1729 to 1830. "Water Engineering" is said to be the first example of the application of integral calculus to engineering, and it also provides detailed explanations on mathematics, hydraulics, heat science, and mechanical engineering.

フランスの軍人，土木技術者。工兵出身で，弾道学，砲術などの研究に業績をあげ，1758年にパリ兵器廠長官兼工兵総監となった。彼は理論と実務にたけ，兵学のみならず土木建設工学においても大きな貢献をなした。その著作《技術者の科学》は建設技術者のハンドブックとして，1729年より1830年まで約1世紀の間次々と版を重ねた。また，《水工学》は積分計算法を工学に応用した最初の例といわれ，数学，水力学，熱学，機械工学についても詳述している。
