1693‐1761 French soldier and civil engineer. A former engineer, he achieved great success in research into ballistics and gunnery, and in 1758 he became director of the Paris Arsenal and Inspector General of Engineers. He was skilled in theory and practice, and made great contributions not only to military science but also to civil engineering and construction engineering. His work, "Science of the Engineer," was a handbook for construction engineers and was reprinted several times over the course of nearly a century, from 1729 to 1830. "Water Engineering" is said to be the first example of the application of integral calculus to engineering, and it also provides detailed explanations on mathematics, hydraulics, heat science, and mechanical engineering.
