Eliezer Ben‐Yehuda

The father of the modern Hebrew language revival. His real name was Eliezer Yizhak Perelmann. He was born in Lithuania and studied medicine in Paris, but he called for the revival of Hebrew as the mother tongue of the Jewish people and worked hard to make it a reality. He emigrated to Palestine in 1881 and founded the linguistic association Wa'ad ha-Lashon (later the Hebrew Academy). He also planned and produced the 17-volume Hebrew Dictionary (1910-59), most of which he personally compiled.

現代ヘブライ語再興の祖。本名Eliezer Yizhak Perelmann。リトアニアに生まれ，パリで医学を学ぶが，ユダヤ人の母国語としてヘブライ語を再生させることを呼びかけ，その実現に尽力した。1881年パレスティナへ移住し，言語協会Wa’ad ha‐Lashon(のちのヘブライ語アカデミー)を創設。また全17巻にのぼるヘブライ語大辞典の編纂･刊行(1910‐59)を企画し，その大部分をみずからの手で実現した。
