1858‐1922 The father of the modern Hebrew language revival. His real name was Eliezer Yizhak Perelmann. He was born in Lithuania and studied medicine in Paris, but he called for the revival of Hebrew as the mother tongue of the Jewish people and worked hard to make it a reality. He emigrated to Palestine in 1881 and founded the linguistic association Wa'ad ha-Lashon (later the Hebrew Academy). He also planned and produced the 17-volume Hebrew Dictionary (1910-59), most of which he personally compiled. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
