In Germany, this nickname means "an abnormally big eater," "a drunkard," or "an insatiable greed." It is also called "Hans Nimmersat." It was already used in the story of "Reineke Fox," but it seems to have become common after a large, rare bird was caught in the moat outside Vienna in 1663 and was nicknamed "Nimmersat" for gobbling down 4 kg of fish in one go. This led to the spread of a rumor that this bird (Ibis), a member of the stork family with a food pouch similar to that of a pelican, would gather in flocks in Asia Minor (Anatolia) to drink the water from ponds and catch fish.
