Japanese: カバノキ[科]（英語表記）hazelnut family

Dicotyledonous plants, found mainly in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, include birch and hornbeam (Carpinus caryophyllus) in six genera and about 100 species (Figure). Most species flower in early spring, before the leaves emerge. Deciduous tall trees, shrubs, or small trees. Leaves are simple and alternate, with double serrated edges. They have stipules, but fall early. There are male and female flowers, which grow in separate inflorescences. The male inflorescences hang down as long catkins, and are dispersed by the wind. There are male flowers with perianths (Betulaceae subfamily) and those without perianths, with stamens growing on the bracts (Hazelinae subfamily).

双子葉植物，北半球の温帯を中心にシラカバやシデ類(クマシデ)など6属約100種を有する(図)。大部分の種は早春，葉の開出に先だって，開花する。落葉の高木，低木または灌木。葉は単葉で互生し，縁には重鋸歯がある。托葉はあるが，早落性。花には雄花と雌花があり，別々の花序につく。雄花序は長い尾状花序となって垂れ下がり，風に吹かれて花粉を散らす。雄花には花被のあるもの(カバノキ亜科)と，花被がなく苞葉の上におしべがつくもの(ハシバミ亜科)とがある。
