A city in northeastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It occupies the eastern slope of Mt. Fuji and the western slope of the Hakone outer rim, and in between is a plateau that forms the watershed between the Kise River and the Sakawa River, and the city center has developed. The name comes from the fact that a temporary shrine was built here to house the body of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was buried on Mt. Kuno, when it was moved to Nikko. It is a transportation hub with the Gotemba Line and an interchange on the Tomei Expressway that opened in 1969, and industries such as electrical and general equipment and transportation equipment are thriving. It is the gateway to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and is known as a summer resort because of its high altitude and the trailhead for Mt. Fuji, and tourism development is progressing with golf courses and other facilities. Agriculture is sluggish due to the volcanic ash soil, but chicken farming, pig farming, and highland vegetable cultivation are thriving. The foot of Mt. Fuji is the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's East Fuji Training Area. In 2012, a junction was established where the Shin-Tomei Expressway branches off from the Tomei Expressway. 194.90km2 . 89,030 people (2010).
