In 1523, a military incident broke out in Ningbo when Hosokawa and Ouchi clans sent ships to Ming China. The Hosokawa and Ouchi clans were at odds over the profits of trade between Japan and Ming China, and the conflict involved the interests of Hakata merchants who were allied with the Ouchi clan and Sakai merchants who were connected to the Hosokawa clan. The Ouchi ship arrived at Ningbo with Muneshige Kendo as its chief envoy, and the Hosokawa ship with Ranko Mizusa as its chief envoy. The Hosokawa ship, which arrived later, was bribed by the deputy envoy, Song Soqing, a Ming man, and was given a higher seat at the guesthouse. Enraged by this, Muneshige and his men killed Mizusa, burned down the Hosokawa ship, set fire to roadside areas, killed Ming people, and then departed for the sea. This led to strict restrictions on future trade by ships to Ming China.
