A city in southern Finland. It is located on the northern slope of the Salpauselka moraine, which runs along the southern edge of the lake district. It became a city in the 19th century, but grew rapidly after World War II. Its population is 97,543 (2001). Many refugees from Karelia, which was ceded to the Soviet Union (now Russia) after the war, settled here. It is at the southern end of the Päijänne River system, and is a key transportation hub where land transport routes also converge. A variety of industries are based here, including furniture, metal, food, textile and glass. An international skiing competition is held here every February. In summer, the city is bustling with tourists visiting the Lake District. [Hideo Tsukada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
