...The piano can play monophonic, polyphonic, and harmonious melodies, and therefore functions as both a melodic and a harmonic instrument, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in solo, ensemble, and accompaniment. It can be said to be the most useful and fundamental instrument in Western music, both as a concert instrument and in the home or educational setting.
【structure】
Today's pianos come in two types: grand pianos (flat pianos, Fig. 2, Fig. 3), which have horizontally strung strings, and upright pianos (vertical pianos, Fig. 4, Fig. 5), which have vertically strung strings. The latter are a simplified model inferior to the former in tone quality, volume, and sound generation mechanism, and are primarily used for home use and practice.
