Taranoki - Taranoki

Japanese: タラノキ - たらのき
Taranoki - Taranoki

A deciduous shrub of the Araliaceae family (APG classification: Araliaceae). It grows to about 4 meters in height, with a yellowish-brown, upright trunk that does not branch much and has sharp thorns. The leaves are large, bipinnate, compound, and gathered at the ends of the branches, 0.5 to 1 meter long. The leaflets consist of 5 to 9 pinnae, which are 5 to 12 cm long and hairless. The flowers bloom in August in large panicles, white in color. The fruits are spherical drupes about 3 mm in diameter and ripen black. They are distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean peninsula, China, and Siberia, and are commonly found growing in the mountains and fields. The origin of the word "taranoki" is unknown. The species with no or few thorns and hairs on the underside of the leaves is sometimes called "medara" to distinguish them. The young shoots are edible as wild vegetables. There are 70 species in the genus Taranoki, distributed in Asia, Australia, and North America.
