Mount Nyiragongo (English spelling)

Japanese: ニーラゴンゴ[山]（英語表記）Mount Nyiragongo

An active volcano in central Africa, on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). It is 3,470 meters above sea level. It is part of the Virunga Mountains, which lie between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley in Africa, and borders the west of Mount Karisimbi (4,507 meters), the highest peak in the range. It is known for its caldera at the top and the semicircular lava lake within the crater, which continues to be highly active. To the north stands Mount Nyamuragira (3,056 meters), also an active volcano, and the entire mountain range is an ideal place for volcano research.

アフリカ中部，コンゴ民主共和国(旧，ザイール)東境部にある活火山。標高3470m。アフリカ大地溝帯底部に並ぶエドワード湖とキブ湖の間にあるビルンガ山地Virunga Mountainsに含まれ，山地の最高峰カリシンビ山(4507m)の西に接する。頂部のカルデラと，激しい活動をつづける火口内の半円形の溶岩湖で知られる。北には同じく活火山のニアムラギラ山(3056m)が対峙しており，山群一帯は火山研究の好適地となっている。
