A tape with adhesive applied to one or both sides. Also called adhesive tape. It was invented by the American Richard Drew around 1930, but in Japan it became popular after Nichiban Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. produced the first domestically produced product in 1947 (Showa 22) at the request of GHQ (Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers). It is commonly called cellophane tape, but the name became more commonly used because the company's trademark is "Sellotape." It can be cut to any length and easily applied, so it is widely used in industrial applications such as for repairing and reinforcing documents and ledgers, as well as for packaging and electrical insulation. There are various sizes depending on the purpose, but they can be broadly divided into transparent and opaque. Common transparent adhesive tapes include those based on cellophane or synthetic resin, those with a matte finish (commonly known as mending tape), those with adhesive applied to both sides (double-sided adhesive tape), and those with a printed surface used for packaging seals (colored adhesive tape). Opaque ones include vinyl adhesive tape with excellent waterproof, moisture-proof, and insulating properties, paper adhesive tape based on Japanese paper or craft paper, durable cloth tape, and other duct tapes made from paper or cloth.
