A city in northwest Yamanashi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the confluence of the Kamanashi River and the Shiokawa River. During the Edo period, the city center developed as a post town where the Koshu Road and the Saku Okan branched off, and as the terminus of boat transport on the Fuji River. The rural areas were one of the centers of silkworm-raising in the prefecture, but have since declined, and mulberry fields are being converted into orchards for grapes, peaches, apples, and other fruits. With good transportation access via the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway, the general machinery, transportation equipment, electrical equipment, and metal product industries have developed rapidly, and the city's shipment value of manufactured goods is second only to Kofu City in the prefecture (2003). It is a base for climbing the Southern Alps, with Mount Houou at its western end. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 143.69 km2 . 32,477 people (2010). 143.69km2。
