One of the four gospels in the New Testament. It was the latest to be written. It has almost nothing in common with the synoptic gospels, and shows a unique theological attitude that can be called "John's theology." The gospel begins with the famous words, "In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God." It contains unique accounts such as the light as the incarnation of the Logos, an explanation of John the Baptist who appeared to bear witness to the only Son of the Father, John's testimony to Jesus, the miracle at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, a dialogue with Nicodemus, the healing of the lame and blind man of Sisse of Bethesda, an explanation of Jesus' own testimony, the resurrection of Lazarus, and the resurrection of Jesus himself. It also explains many deeds and signs as testimony of Jesus, the Son of God, and in their organic or symbolic connection with Christian doctrine (especially the church). Compared to the other gospels, it also emphasizes life and love (God's love, Christ's love, Christian love) more than any other gospel, and is therefore called the Gospel of Love. Irenaeus attributes the authorship to John the son of Zebedee, one of the Twelve Apostles, but this is uncertain.
