Sleeping Beauty - Sleeping Beauty (English) Dornröschen

This is a story from Grimm's Fairy Tales (No. 50). When a long-awaited daughter is born, the king holds a banquet and invites all 12 fairies of the kingdom. When all 11 fairies give their blessing to the daughter, the 13th fairy who was not invited enters and predicts that the daughter will die at the age of 15. The 12th fairy corrects this and says that she will not die but fall into a sleep for 100 years. On her 15th birthday, just as predicted, the daughter pricks her finger on a spindle and falls asleep. Everyone in the castle falls asleep and thorns grow all around. Many princes try to push aside the thorns to enter the castle but fail. Exactly 100 years later, one prince succeeds in entering the castle and is so overwhelmed by the beauty of the sleeping girl that he kisses her, which awakens her and the entire castle, and the two are married. This story clearly shows the stylistic characteristics of a fairy tale, such as the passage of 100 years coinciding with the prince's kiss, the daughter being left alone to prick the spindle on her birthday, and the king and queen returning and falling asleep just as she does, etc. The fact that the daughter wakes up from her 100-year slumber is not yet 115 years old is also a stylistic characteristic.

『グリム童話集』（第50番）の話。待ち望んでいた娘が生まれたので、王は国の仙女12人も招いて祝宴を開く。仙女たち11人が娘に祝福を与えたとき、招待されなかった13番目の仙女が入ってきて、娘は15歳のとき死ぬと予言する。12番目の仙女が、死でなく100年間の眠りに落ちると訂正する。15歳の誕生日に娘は予言どおり紡錘(つむ)を指に刺して眠りに落ち、城中の人も眠り、周りには茨(いばら)が生い茂る。多くの王子が茨をかき分けて入ろうとするが失敗する。ちょうど100年たったとき、ある王子が入ることに成功し、眠っている娘の美しさのあまりキスをすると、娘は目覚め、城全体も目覚めて、2人は結婚する。100年の経過と王子のキスが時間的に一致するとか、ちょうど誕生日に娘1人留守番をして紡錘を刺し、しかも眠りに落ちるときには王や女王も帰ってきて同じく眠りに落ちるなど、昔話の様式上の特徴がはっきりみられる話である。100年の眠りから覚めた娘が115歳になっていないことも同じ様式上の性質である。
