Columbanus

Columbanus

A monk and saint from Northern Ireland. In 590, together with 12 monks from Bangor Abbey, he founded three monasteries, including Luxeuil, in the Vosges Mountains in the Frankish Burgundian territory, and educated many children of Frankish nobles as monks. However, due to the resentment of the Frankish Church against his Irish customs and the anger of Burgundian King Theuderic II's mother, Empress Brunhilde, for refusing to bless the illegitimate child of the king, Columbanus was banished from the Vosges in 603. He traveled throughout Gaul, and on his way to Rome, he founded monasteries in Bregenz on Lake Constance and in Bobbio in northern Italy. He died in Bobbio without reaching Rome.
