Niponius impressicollis (English name)

Japanese: ホソエンマムシ（英語表記）Niponius impressicollis

An insect of the Coleoptera family, Acanthidae. It is known as a natural enemy of bark beetles that bore holes in weakened or dead trees. Its body is black and cylindrical, with reddish brown antennae and tarsus. Its forehead has a pair of horn-like projections that protrude forward. There are a pair of depressions on the dorsal surface of its thorax, and the two posterior abdominal segments are exposed from the elytra. The exposed two segments have four and two depressions, respectively. It is about 5 mm long. It is found in areas ranging from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in Taiwan. Adults emerge from around May, burrow into the tunnels of bark beetles and other insects, and prey on them.

甲虫目ホソエンマムシ科の昆虫。衰弱した木や枯木に穿孔（せんこう）するキクイムシ類の天敵として知られる。体は黒色円筒形で触角と跗節（ふせつ）は赤褐色。前頭には前方へ突出する1対の角状の突起がある。胸の背面には1対のくぼみがあり，腹部の後方2節が上翅から裸出する。裸出した2節にはそれぞれ4個と2個のへこみがある。体長約5mm。北海道から九州までのほか，台湾にも分布する。成虫は5月ころから出現し，キクイムシ類などの孔道に潜りこみ，キクイムシ類を捕食する。
