...In the 16th century Kodo Kihan by Hachiya Sogo, we see Renri-ko and Kagetsu-ko, but the appearance of a wide variety of kumi-ko was limited to the Edo period. In the Kono-ki Jo, said to be written by Hosokawa Yusai, the ten old groups of Goie-ryu incense are described: Ju-ko, Kagetsu-ko, Ujiyama-ko, Kotori-ko, Hototogisu-ko, Ogusa-ko, Keizu-ko, Takiawase (a combination of ten kinds of incense), Genpei-ko, and Toriawase (a combination of birds), and it is believed that they were established around the Keicho period (1596-1615).
