1892‐1975 Indian historian. He studied at the University of Madras, and from 1929 he was professor of history at the same university, where he pioneered the history of South India and made great achievements. After retiring in 1947, he served as professor at the University of Mysore and director of the UNESCO Institute for Traditional Culture. Among his many books, he is famous for his groundbreaking research on Chola history, and his compilation of materials on the history of Vijayanagar and his research on the history of exchanges between South India and Southeast Asia are also important. His A History of South India (1958) has been reprinted many times and is well-known as an overview of South Indian history, and in his later years he wrote several enlightening overviews on the religious and cultural history of South India.
