Garden party - Enyuukai

Japanese: 園遊会 - えんゆうかい
Garden party - Enyuukai
A reception held in a garden. It is a translation of the English garden party, and is said to have originated in the late 19th century. Guests are invited to the garden in the season of beautiful flowers and greenery, and are entertained with light meals and music. In Japan, the first Imperial Garden Party was held in 1883 by Shigenobu Okuma at his home in Waseda. The Imperial Garden Party is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, when the Emperor and Empress invite distinguished people from Japan and abroad to Akasaka Imperial Garden. It began in the autumn of 1880, when Emperor Meiji held a Chrysanthemum Viewing Party (which became the Spring Cherry Blossom Viewing Party the following year) at Akasaka Imperial Palace to entertain diplomats. It was suspended during the war, but was revived as a garden party in 1953. After the war, the Spring Cherry Blossom Viewing Party was sponsored by the government, but in 1965 it became sponsored by the Imperial Family. It is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, at Akasaka Imperial Garden in Tokyo. Around 2,000 people are invited each time.
