He is the author of the oldest complete biography of Muhammad, the "Biography of the Prophet," compiled between 704 and 767. It was originally a trilogy called the "Book of Maghazi," but was lost over time and is now known to us as the "Biography of the Prophet," edited by Ibn Hisham. Both his grandfather and father were famous scholars of their time, who came to Medina as prisoners of war and were released. He studied in Medina under his father and Zuhrī, but was shunned by the elders of the academic world in Medina, and traveled around the country before dying in Baghdad shortly after it was founded.
