...In 1922, Dziga Vertov, the Russian avant-garde documentary filmmaker known for Man with a Camera/This is Russia (1920), coined the term Kino Pravda in response to the newsreels he shot as a supplement to the major newspaper Pravda, a newspaper filmed on film (kino). French film historian Georges Sadoul translated this literally into French (kino = cinema = film, pravda = verité = truth) and gave it to the new French documentary films that emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s, particularly the series of works by Jean Rouch, a racist who was active in Africa. Among them, I Am Black (1959), in which black people "act" out their own real lives and recreate them on screen, was praised as the first masterpiece of cinéma verite, promoting and systematizing the method that Robert Flaherty had attempted in Nanook of the North (1922), and "capturing the truth of humanity vividly in the magnetic field of reality." *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Kino Pravda" are listed below.
