Ibn al-Nafīs

Medieval Arab physician. Born in Damascus and died in Cairo. He studied medicine under Ibn al-Dakhwār and served as head of the hospital in Cairo. He wrote commentaries on Hippocrates, Hunayn bin Ishaq, and Ibn Sina. Two important works are the commentaries on the Canon of Medicine, one of which is the Compendium Canonica, especially its Latin translation, the Compendium medicinae. The other is the Commentaries on the Anatomy of Ibn Sina, in which he rejected the mistake held by Galen that "blood flows through a gap in an invisible partition between the right and left ventricles," and proposed the correct idea of pulmonary circulation before Servetus in the 16th century.

中世アラブの医者。ダマスクスに生まれ，カイロで死んだ。イブン･アッダフワールIbn al‐Dakhwārについて医学を学び，カイロの病院長を務めた。ヒッポクラテス，フナイン･ブン･イスハーク，イブン･シーナーの注釈書を著す。重要なものは《医学典範》の2種の注で，一つは《典範要綱》，とくにそのラテン語訳の《Compendium medicinae》が知られる。他の一つは《イブン･シーナー解剖学注解》で，この書で彼は〈右心室と左心室との間にある目に見えぬ隔壁の隙間より血液が流れる〉というガレノス以来の誤りを退け，16世紀のセルベトゥスに先立って正しい肺循環の考えを提起した。
