Egyptian historian from the late Mamluk period (1448-1524). He grew up in a unique family environment - his grandfather was a Turkish Mamluk (slave soldier) and his father a non-Mamluk Halqa knight - and studied law and history under two of the leading scholars of the time, Suyūti and Ibn Khalil (died 1514). He lived a wealthy life thanks to his vast iqta holdings, and he devoted himself to historical research, leaving behind an 11-volume magnum opus on Egyptian history from ancient times to the Ottoman conquest, Badā'i' al-Zuhūr: Wonders of Flowers.
