Japanese: カンバセーション･ピース（英語表記）conversation piece

A term of art history used mainly in Britain to refer to a form of group portraiture with the following limitations: (1) It depicts several identifiable people (a family or group) in an unidealized and unadorned manner. (2) It is a portrait intended for private use and is not very large in size. (3) At least some of the people in the painting are shown in conversation or in some form of communication. (4) The background, whether outdoors or indoors, is a detailed depiction of the living environment of the people depicted in the painting.

主としてイギリスで用いられる美術史用語で，集団肖像画の一形式を意味し，次のような限定がある。(1)だれであるか特定できる複数の人物(家族や集団)が，理想化せず飾りたてない姿で描かれている。(2)私的な場に飾る肖像画で，寸法もそう大きくない。(3)画中の，少なくとも一部の人物が，互いに会話を交わしているか，なんらかのコミュニケーションを行っている様子で描かれている。(4)背景は戸外であれ室内であれ，画中人物の生活環境を詳細に表している。
